Though limited in numbers, the live crowd went wild when Kyler Murray’s perfect desperation pass connected with DeAndre Hopkins in the game’s final seconds to rescue the Arizona Cardinals.
Outside the stadium and across the country, however, there was no limit to the reaction after the play stunned—and defeated—the Buffalo Bills at State Farm Stadium on Sunday. Hopkins rose above three Bills defenders to complete what many are calling the play of the year to this point. The nation was certainly watching, and the social media crowd went wild.
Hall of Fame receiver Randy Moss tweeted to his nearly 50 million followers “I DONT NEED ANY NOMINEES FOR THIS WEEK!!!Did yaw see @DeAndreHopkins??WOW.” That garnered more than 80,000 likes Monday. “WOW WOW WOW!! HOP HOP HOP! @DeAndreHopkins My bro different!!”
The drama didn’t escape the NFL’s reigning MVP, Patrick Mahomes, who may have some company—Kyler Murray—as he tries to defend his title. “@DeAndreHopkins is a monster man!!!” he tweeted.
Other sports, including golf, joined the act. The PGA account compared Hopkins’ acrobatics with the much more Earth-bound Phil Mickelson, showing a photo of Mickelson jumping in celebration after his Masters victory in 2004, adding “DeAndre Hopkins with ONE of the best leaps in Masters Sunday history.”
As for the key actor in this Hollywood finish, he played out before only 4,200 fans?
Hopkins called it the greatest grab he’s ever made in the NFL. “This one is No. 1,” Hopkins said. “It was to win the game, no question, against a playoff opponent. … In basketball terminology, that’s what they call this … somebody get dunked on. It was on three people. Yeah. Yeah, they were in position. It was just a better catch by I.”
The catch was so great, it’s not even worth addressing the creative grammar.
