Oh, 2020, you are such a strange year in SO many ways. Just when we thought and hoped wed seen it all, something new comes along. It happened in an NFL game on Sunday, where a player scored a touchdown late in the game to put his team in front, and then after the game said he was mad as hellthat he did it.

The player was Todd Gurley of the Atlanta Falcons. With his team driving and on the 10-yard line, the Detroit Lions defense appeared to let him have a clear path to the end zone. They did that because it would allow their offense to get the ball one more time and try to drive for a winning score of their own. The smart strategy would have been for Gurley to get close to the goal line and then fall down. They could let the clock wind down and then kick a field goal on the last play to win the game. It was a bizarre sight, watching him tightrope the end zone trying desperately not to fall in.

“I was trying not to (score). My momentum took me in,” Gurley said. “It’s kind of crazy, the last time I played Detroit, I went down. This time I end up scoring. It’s like what goes around comes around. It’s one of them unfortunate situations. I’ve been, I mean, plenty of those situations my rookie year, six or seven, and I’ve always got down. It was an unfortunate one right there.

Wouldnt you know it, the Lions get the ball, march down the field, and quarterback Matthew Stafford throws a touchdown pass on the final play of the game, and they kick the extra point to win 23-22.

Only in 2020.
