There seems to be secession movements brewing all around us in North America. Earlier this month, Alberta51 gained some serious momentum in their mission to get their province to break away from the rest of Canada.

Now just south of the border, the movement for rural Oregon counties to be incorporated into Idaho seems to be gaining steam, as Fox News notes.

Many rural Oregonians simply don’t feel represented by their liberal state government, and feel that Portland yields an inordinate amount of control.

Their movement to secede, sparked by the Greater Idaho Movement, has garnered so much momentum that Democratic Senator Jeff Merkley had to address the topic on Tuesday.

Speaking at a town hall at an Oregon high school, he said, “I would not want to see the state carved up. I love every part of it.”

But Merkley’s pleas may be falling on deaf ears. A local Idaho state representative endorsed the Greater Idaho Movement.

State Representative Judy Boyle told Fox News, “I have lived along the Oregon border my entire life, so I have many east Oregon friends. They have been quite frustrated with the liberal I-5 western Oregon corridor running their state and completely ignoring their values and needs.”

She notes that her neighbors share similar conservative values, while living in a state that permits legal hard drugs. Oregon just decriminalized mushrooms last election cycle.

On the Oregon side, the influential former Speaker of the House has endorsed the idea as well, getting support from credible political players in both states.

Predictions state that Idaho would benefit with 170 million dollars pumped into their economy, should they incorporate much of rural Oregon. The population would increase about 21%.

We’ll see if this movement gains any momentum, but with one of Oregon’s senators addressing the issue, you can be sure that the Democrats are sounding the alarm.
