Sarah Fuller’s history-making appearance on Saturday, when she became the first woman to play in a Power Five Conference football game, was not a one-time thing. She is expected to be Vanderbilt’s kicker again this Saturday when the Commodores play Georgia.
“She’ll be with us on the trip to Georgia and we’re going to put the best people out there,” interim coach Todd Fitch said. “If she’s our best option, we’ll continue with her and we’ll do the best we can for the team.”
There’s a good chance she’ll be needed, because none of Vandy’s specialists who missed the game this past Saturday at Missouri because of COVID-19 protocols have returned to the team.
Because Vanderbilt was shut out by Missouri, Fuller only had one chance to get on the field. She executed what her coach called a perfect squib kick to start the second half, pinning the Tigers at their own 35-yard line.
It’s been an incredible week for Fuller. She’s the starting goalie on the Vanderbilt women’s soccer team and led her squad to the Southeastern Conference Tournament championship. She immediately followed that with Saturday’s history-making performance, and then on Monday a great week got even more memorable as she was named the SEC Special Teams co-Player of the Week.
