Say this about former NBA star Dwyane Wade and his wife, the former actress Gabriel Union; they are not going to let something like a historic drought that is ravaging the state of California, specifically Southern California, get in the way of their family using as much water as they damn well please.
The crisis is so bad that Governor Gavin Newsom has called it a “historic water emergency,” There are all kinds of rules in place to conserve water, including fines of up to $500 for allowing a sprinkler stream to hit a sidewalk. Residents in LA essentially have a water budget that the city has calculated based on the number of people in the household, the size of the house, yard, and other factors.
The Los Angeles Times reported who the biggest offenders were when it came to overusing their monthly water limit. Several celebrities were cited, including Kim Kardashian, but I’m not sure if Kim, Khloe, Kendall, Kylie, and Kourtney kombined could go through more H2o than D-Wade and Gabby help themselves to in a given month.
In May alone, the Wade’s consumed an unfathomable 489,000 gallons of water more than their water budget allowed, according to the newspaper. Almost half a million gallons of water more than what they were supposed to stay at.
Wow. What could the Wades possibly use as an excuse for this gluttonous and tone-deaf overconsumption of water? They made a joint statement to address their selfishness and blamed it on their swimming pool in the Hidden Hills section of Calabasas.
“We have been doing everything we can to rectify the situation and will continue to go to extensive lengths to resolve the issue.… We will continue to work with the city and the water distribution company to make sure this isn’t an issue moving forward.”
That doesn’t exactly explain things. Did they drain and then refill their pool daily? Twice a day?
As for the month of June, well, kudos to the Wades for only using 90,000 gallons more than their limit.
