Just wait ’til May. May 8, to be exact. That’s what all the DeSantis allies were telling everyone. DeSantis is just waiting until the Florida legislative session ends. He could claim being the bigger man and wait until the crucial duties of his governorship were out the way. He could claim he was putting the people of Florida and his job first, and setting a conservative agenda for his state before he focuses on going national.

And the Florida governor almost said as much. “You ain’t seen nothing yet. This is going to be the most productive legislative session we have had across the board, and I think people are going to be really excited. So those are what we’re going to be doing over these next few months as we get beyond that, then we can decide from there.”

But how strange, he’s touring Asia right now. While Fort Lauderdale still deals with a gas shortage and effects from historic rainfall and flooding.

The legislative session ends May 5, but DeSantis appears to be faltering on a decision as to whether he’ll jump in at all. He’s been telling donors that he’s 100% doing so, but moving the announcement goal post doesn’t show that.

ABC News came out with the news, and had an inside track with sources unnamed. Most likely, the campaign approved the leak.

DeSantis should launch an exploratory committee mid May, but usually it takes about a week before candidates officially jump in after the exploratory committee formation. A whole month shows DeSantis is still very much testing the waters. You can’t blame him, a flurry of polls show him doing worse than ever against Trump. One poll has Trump at62% and DeSantis at 16%. To contrast, Biden is at 60% and RFK Jr. is at 19%. This means the Democratic and Republican 2024 Primaries are equally competitive.

DeSantis, probably at this point, is hoping for a big stumble on Trump’s part. And that’s entirely possible. But if that doesn’t happen, DeSantis may not pull the trigger at all. The original plan was always early May for an announcement. This further cements DeSantis’s overly cautious and indecisive image.
