The NY Post reports that Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy rehired his old commentator Ben Mintz on Wednesday. He was previously put on the chopping block in early May for dropping a racial slur while quoting a song lyric.

It wasn’t Portnoy’s choice, but PENN Entertainment bought 36% of shares in 2020, and purchased the remaining shares in February.

But now Mintz will be working for Portnoy again, but not in the capacity you’d think.

Mintz won’t be back at Barstool.

He’ll be a pitchman for Brick Watch, which is a company that Portnoy started outside of his original one.

Brick Watch is exactly what you might think it is, a luxury watch company.

So Mintz will be going from commentator to essentially a glorified infomercial guy. But at least Portnoy gave him a leg up through the only way he could:

Mintz remained grateful to his friend saying, “I am being rehired by Dave Portnoy as the first employee for Brick Watch, and I cannot be more happy about it.”

Portnoy stayed true to his friend the whole time. He was vocally opposed to Mintz’s axing from the get-go. He even said PENN Entertainment’s decision could be a death blow to Barstool as a whole.

But the parent company said they needed to can the guy to protect their gambling licenses. Think ESG scores. They operate a number of high-end casinos across the country:

But the future of Portnoy himself is far from secured. He may be out after his 20-month contract expires. The parent company issued a statement saying, “Portnoy is now a talent represented through loan out companies.”

They don’t really seem to be proud to call him theirs, and the writing might already be on the wall.
