Tom Cruise has been in about 70 movies.  Even though he’s arguably the biggest movie star on the planet, he has never won an Academy Award, and until this weekend, he had never done something else; have one of his films reach the $1 billion mark in global box office revenue.

Top Gun: Maverick officially became the 50th Hollywood film overall and the first Cruise flick to reach $1 billion. A rerelease of Maverick in premium large-format screened theaters and select Imax theaters pushed the movie over the mark.

It becomes just the second film released in the pandemic era to move past $1 billion.  Spider-Man: No Way Home was the other.

Another thing that has helped the film reach the 10-digit fraternity is that 16% of the moviegoers who bought a ticket have seen it more than once.

Cruise has had an amazing career, no doubt, but before this summer, his biggest film worldwide was Mission: Impossible-Fallout, which brought in just under $800 million in 2018.

If you’re curious, the original Tog Gun back in 1986 brought in $357.8 million, according to a story in the Hollywood Reporter.
