Just under a month ago, Alabama head coach Nick Saban tested positive for coronavirus, the college football world freaked out, and he was on the sidelines three days later coaching his team to another win.
Two weeks ago, Heisman Trophy favorite Trevor Lawrence of Clemson had a positive COVID-19 test, yet he was on the sidelines with his teammates 10 days later at Notre Dame watching them lose their first game of the season.
On Tuesday, more coronavirus chaos in college football broke out, as the SEC announced the postponement of Saturday’s Alabama-LSU and Texas A&M-Tennessee games. COVID-19 testing had depleted the Tigers and Aggies rosters to the point where they could not field a team.
The SEC said in a statement that “the opportunity to reschedule the Alabama at LSU game will need to be evaluated” and that the “rescheduling of games on the remaining SEC football schedule may include December 19 as a playing date.”
Louisiana State coach Ed Orgeron told the media on Monday that multiple players, including several starters, would not be able to play. Some of those players tested positive for coronavirus and others were out as a result of contact tracing.
The LSU athletic director, Scott Woodward, released a standard, politically correct statement, saying, “We are disappointed there will be no football in Tiger Stadium this weekend, but we will always prioritize the health and wellness of our student-athletes. We will continue to follow the league’s protocols in order to safely and responsibly return to play.”
