If you need to be spotted some money and Elon Musk is your friend, now is the time to hit him up.

The founder and CEO of Tesla and SpaceX has been declared the richest person in the world by Bloomberg, with a net worth that hit $188.5 billion on Thursday to pass Amazon founder Jeff Bezos’ measly $187 billion.

Tesla’s Thursday-morning stock surge pushed Musk past Bezos on the Bloomberg Billionaires index, which ranks the world’s 500 richest people. It might be a tad sweeter for Musk, considering SpaceX is a private space-exploration rival of Bezos’ Blue Origin company.

Musk, 49, has made an incredible rally over the past year, gaining $150 billion to roughly quintuple his net worth. Much of that has come because Tesla stock has skyrocketed by 743% over a year in which it joined the S&P 500 Index.

With production numbers (500,000 cars in 2020) being a fraction of those of major American automakers, future gains for Tesla are expected as newly earned Democratic control of the Senate favors expansion of electric-vehicle use.

“I want to be able to contribute as much as possible to the city on Mars,” Musk told Axel Springer last month. “That just means a lot of capital.”

The five richest people on Bloomberg’s list account more for more than $700 billion. That does not even include Warren Buffett, who slipped to seventh place because of a Chinese bottled-water tycoon’s increase. The next 20 richest people add more than $50 billion of net worth.

All of them are making Earthlings hope it is more affordable to be a Martian once Musk is done.
