It’s the golden rule – he who has the gold makes the rules — that applies to pub ownership.
MMA star and whiskey enthusiast Conor McGregor purchased the Marble Arch pub. He then promptly banned a guy he punched a couple of years ago for reportedly refusing a sample of McGregor’s Proper No. 12 hooch.
In 2019, McGregor received a fine of more than $1,000 (yeah, chump change for the multimillionaire) for smacking Desmond Keogh at the Marble Arch.
Keogh, 50, is no longer welcome following McGregor’s $2 million purchase.
But Keogh is far from bothered.
“I’m not really concerned because I probably wouldn’t be going back to it now,” Keogh told the Irish Mirror. “I wouldn’t be going back anyway, probably, especially now. I wouldn’t want to be spending money in his pub, to be honest.
“I didn’t really make much of it. It’s no skin off my nose really.”
To this point, the word “class” doesn’t immediately leap to mind when McGregor’s name is brought up, but perhaps with age will come wisdom.
In an interview with ESPN in August 2019, the 32-year-old admitted he needed to “lead by example” in the future.
“That man deserved to enjoy his time in the pub without having it end the way it did,” McGregor told ESPN. “I tried to make amends and I made amends back then. But it doesn’t matter. I was in the wrong. I must come here before you and take accountability and take responsibility. …
“I will face this head on. I will not hide from it. I was in the wrong.”
Well, petulantly buying a bar and then banning someone who, from all indications is a decent person, seems like a step back in the whole “lead by example” thing.
