Veteran journalist Chris Wallace is leaving CNN after three years to pursue independent ventures in streaming or podcasting, marking a significant shift in his career. Wallace, who joined CNN after two decades at Fox News, had initially been part of the network’s ill-fated streaming service CNN+.

“I have nothing but positive things to say. CNN has been very good to me,” Wallace told the Daily Beast, describing his decision as “quite liberating.”

“This is the first time in 55 years I’ve been between jobs,” Wallace said. “I am actually excited and liberated by that.”

Despite being offered a contract extension, he chose not to renegotiate, citing the growing influence of platforms like podcasting and expressing excitement about new media, inspired by figures like Joe Rogan and Charlamagne tha God. According to Wallace, the independent media space seems to be “where the action is.”

CNN CEO Mark Thompson praised Wallace as a respected journalist, acknowledging his contributions to the network.

“Chris Wallace is one of the most respected political journalists in the news business with a unique track record across radio, print, broadcast television, cable television, and streaming,” Thompson said in a statement. “We want to thank him for the dedication and wisdom he’s brought to all his work at CNN and to wish him the very best for the future.”

The move comes amid broader industry challenges, including declining ratings and cost-cutting measures post-2024 elections. Wallace’s departure underscores the changing landscape of media consumption and the rise of independent content creation.
