A handful of years ago, Prime Minster Justin Trudeau and his Liberal government thought it would be a good idea to spend $3.5 billion of taxpayer money to improve women’s lives across the globe through the Feminist International Assistance Policy.

Ostensibly, it didn’t seem too crazy. It would target women empowerment in nations that aren’t strong on women’s individual rights. But that ethos right there is vague and hard to track.

The Auditor General of Canada looked at the efforts and said the group wasn’t tracking their effects long term.

In fact, these issues were flagged internally as far back as 2021 and no one did anything about them.

For example, a school received funds overseas from the organization to add washrooms to the women’s restrooms. That way, they’d have a more welcoming environment, and thus more girls would go to see, something which was a rarity in the receiving country. The government tracked how many washrooms were built, but not if attendance for girls went up or not.

The Auditor General is further investigating the group, and it may very well result in its closure.
