It’s hot in some places in the country. Smoldering, actually, especially out west, and for 22,000 people in Colorado, there’s not much they could do about it.

Excel Energy, the utility provider in the Denver area, locked customers’ thermostats for a good part of the day last week to conserve energy.

These people were not happy about it, even though they had signed up for the Colorado AC Rewards program, which meant this was a possibility.

As the temps crept into the 90s last week and residents went to their thermostats to cool the air; they found their dial locked and a message declaring an “energy emergency.”

Temperatures were locked at 78 or 79 degrees during this time. Some people were posting messages on social media that the temps in their homes were locked in as high as 88 degrees.

This was a voluntary program where customers could receive up to a $100 credit when they signed up, and it takes the pressure off during peak times for utility providers.

Excel said the emergence was due to an unexpected outage in Pueblo and high usage.

Some people thought there might be a different reason for the locked thermostats. Comedian Tim Young sent out this tweet.

“In case you’re wondering what will happen if we have all digital currency and electric vehicles.”

Ned Ryun posted this.

“This is every American’s future if we allow the freakish Left to implement the Green New Deal.”

Was it a glimpse into a future where the government has the desire and ability to control every aspect of your life?

Or the byproduct of a heat wave and the consequences of signing up for a money-saving rate plan?

Like almost everything else in America, it’s something most people are divided over.
