Wichita State University is in the midst of an internal investigation into men’s basketball coach Gregg Marshall, and the revelations that are starting to leak out are definitely befitting the schools “Shockers” nickname.
Allegations against Marshall include pushing and punching former players, putting his hands around the neck of a staff member, making “Indian howling noises” to a player of Native American descent, and in another instance chasing down and attempting to punch a student-athlete who apparently had parked in the coach’s parking spot. Sounds like the university has plenty of situations to investigate.
Wichita State released the following statement: “The university is in the process of an independent investigation conducted by Tueth Keeney, a St. Louis–based law firm. … The investigation is being completed in an expeditious and deliberate manner. We have received full cooperation from university staff, coaches, current student-athletes and coach Gregg Marshall and support any individual who chooses to participate in order to conduct a fair, impartial and thorough investigation. In the interim, activities of the team will continue as scheduled, and, as it does regularly, the university has reminded all staff, coaches and student-athletes of relevant policies and channels for reporting concerns.”
Marshall has been the head coach at Wichita State since 2007. Over the past 13 years, he has led his team to a Final Four appearance in 2013 and five Missouri Valley Conference championships. The Shockers moved into the American Athletic Conference in 2017.
Wichita State saw a mass exodus of players last spring, with eight players entering the transfer protocol. After hearing what a swell guy their coach seems to be, it’s kind of surprising they can find five players to take the floor.
