Biden is heading to Ottawa for a one on one meeting with Justin Trudeau.

This is while the Canadian Prime Minister is facing a potential scandal on Chinese interference in the last federal Canadian election. That issue won’t be on the table, but it’ll certainly be the big elephant in the room.

The big issue is NORAD, or North American Aerospace Defense Command. That’s the group that overseas protection of the US and Canada in regards to their airspace. They’ll make efforts to modernize the the organization after the Chinese weather balloon had been seen flying over the airspace of both countries.

On the Ukraine, expect Biden to pressure Trudeau to spend more on their defense, so the US could spend less. Canada has the highest concentration of Ukrainians outside of the Ukraine itself, with the Canadian population 4% Ukrainian. They were some of the first settlers in central and western Canada as well, creating a bond between the two countries. As Biden faces increasing unpopularity with spending and perhaps more involvement with the Ukraine conflict at home, he’ll want Canada to take much of the pressure off.

The Premier (governor) of Quebec has been pressuring Trudeau to close Roxham Road in his province. That border road provides an immigration loophole. Asylum seekers can land in the US and quickly head up to Canada and stay there. Essentially, the road is unchecked and thus easier to cross into another nation. Then asylum seekers become Canada’s problem. The Premier said, “”The capacity to receive refugees has been greatly exceeded,” after receiving over 40,000 refugees in the span of a few months.

But don’t expect Trudeau to bring that issue up. The two biggest issues of Canada’s concern, immigration and election interference, will be topics Trudeau will be careful to avoid, as he wants to prove himself to be an unflinching ally of the USA.
