The key to a long life appears to include the following; either be a woman or a man living outside the United States.  According to a study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the life expectancy for men in the U.S. was 75.1 years in 2020, which is 1.2 years lower than the year before.

The same study said that women live on average five years longer, and men in other rich countries like Australia, Japan, Norway, and Iceland live eight years longer than American men.

What makes this data more interesting is that American men spend more money on health care than people in any other country on the planet, according to fatherly.com.

One of the reasons men here die earlier is heart disease, which is responsible for almost one-third of deaths in men. Blame obesity, smoking, stress, lack of exercise, alcohol, and poor diet.

Cancer is the second leading cause of death for men in America, accounting for over 22%.

Another reason men in America die younger is because of accidents. Unintentional injury is the official name of the third biggest killer for men under 44, and that category includes overdoses, car accidents, falls, and drownings.

Men in the U.S. commit suicide at a rate 3.7 higher than women.

This is sobering news for many men, but a positive you can take from this story is that if you control your diet, workout, don’t overdo drugs and alcohol, and get regular doctor checkups, you have a good chance of beating these odds.
