This week, NFL Sunday was an emotional rollercoaster, specifically when it came to big time quarterbacks and their grisly leg injuries.

Early in the day, Washington quarterback Alex Smith took the field for the first time since he suffered a ghastly 2018 compound leg fracture that threatened his life and required 17 surgeries.

All the smiles and warm wishes for Smith’s comeback turned to cringes when Dallas quarterback Dak Prescott suffered a gruesome ankle injury that brought him to tears as he was carted off the AT&T Stadium field.

Prescott, a highly respected player, started the day as the NFL passing yardage leader and ended the day in surgery, and he is expected to be out for several months.

“He’ll be back stronger than ever,” his brother Tad tweeted, along with a photo of Dak smiling from his hospital bed.

That statement will come into question this offseason, when the 27 year old Prescott was expected to receive one of the largest NFL contracts ever. He signed a one-year, $31.4 million deal this year, betting on himself to enter the Patrick Mahomes financial stratosphere.

Before this horrible injury, Prescott could barely be kept off the field. He started 69 consecutive games since his rookie year, until a clean tackle on a 9-yard scramble changed all that. Andy Dalton, former longtime Cincinnati starter, replaced Prescott in the Cowboys’ 37-34 match against the New York Giants.

Watching for a Prescott return might prove to be as difficult as watching Smith’s return, who has already achieved enough to be considered for NFL Comeback Player of the Year. Witnessing Prescott sacked five times, as well as Aaron Donald ride his back may instill trepidation in the hears of fans and cast doubt on his road ahead.

“We have no doubt that he will return to the position of leadership and purpose that he brings to our team,” Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said in a statement.
