If Apple decides to remove Twitter from its App Store, there could be what is commonly referred to as “repercussions.”
This will be something very interesting to watch. Apple has a long list of guidelines for apps to be available, and the company says the leading principle is safety.
In other words, it opens the door for them to use perceived offensive content as their out for excluding an app. Here’s something that made it seem like this could happen; Phil Schiller is the man at Apple who oversees the App Store, and last week he deleted his Twitter account. He did that partly in response to Elon Musk saying Apple fees are essentially a hidden 30% tax.
Yoel Roth is the former head of trust and safety for Twitter, and he wrote an op-ed in the New York Times that pointed out the likelihood of Twitter being taken off the Apple and Google app stores.
“Failure to adhere to Apple’s and Google’s guidelines would be catastrophic, risking Twitter’s expulsion from their app stores and making it more difficult for billions of potential users to get Twitter’s services. This gives Apple and Google enormous power to shape the decisions Twitter makes.”
Even Musk has publicly said he knows being booted from Apple could happen. Here’s what he said about it Friday. “I certainly hope it does not come to that.”
Well, let’s fast forward to what could happen if it does.
Musk said in a tweet Friday that he “would make an alternative phone” that would compete head to head with Apple and their iPhone.
And why not? He needs something to do with the three minutes per day he currently has to himself.
