Fraud in the upcoming election, the legitimacy of the outcome, and an increase in violence following the outcome of the election. These are all the things Americans are apparently concerned about in the upcoming Nov. 3 General Election, and the latest poll results by YouGov show that the concerns are real. In a separate poll, a majority of Americans — 61% — agree with concerns that the U.S. could be on the verge of another civil war.
The civil war concerns are flat-out disturbing. Rich Thau, president of Engagious, one of the three firms that conducted the survey, agrees. “This is the single most frightening poll result I’ve ever been associated with,” Thau said. Sports and Leisure Research Group and ROKK Solutions were the other two firms joining Engagious in the survey.
As for the other concerning poll results, a YouGov poll of 1,999 registered voters found that slightly more than half of respondents— 51% — won’t “generally agree on who is the legitimately elected president of the United States,” while just under half — 47% — disagree with the idea that the upcoming election “is likely to be fair and honest.” The online poll was conducted over the first two days of October and has a margin of error of +/- 2.56 percentage points.
Braver Angels is the group that commissioned the YouGov poll; they issued a “Letter From America” calling for respect for those who voted differently while also asking for citizens and groups to disavow violence. “If in the near future we face a constitutional crisis in which our institutions cannot produce consensus on who is the legitimately elected president, we resolve to work together across this chasm for solutions grounded in the Constitution guided by our democratic and non-violent traditions and our sense of shared destiny,” the letter states.
In a separate YouGov poll of 1,505 voters, 56% of respondents said they expect to see “an increase in violence as a result of the election.” The margin of error for the question was +/- 4.2 percentage points.
Wow. That’s bleak, especially when the word “united” is literally in the name of this country.
