Shopping from home has clearly surged during the pandemic and Amazon is definitely seeing the success. The online shopping behemoth has hired more than 400,000 people around the world since last January. The number of hires in combination with the additional 100,000 seasonal workers the company has added, means Amazon has grown by an average of 1400 workers per day over the course of the year.

To put the growth in perspective, In the fourth quarter of 2019 Amazon employed around 647,000 worldwide, by the end of the third-quarter 2020 Amazon had around 1.25 million before their seasonal holiday hiring kicked in. Meaning the company has almost doubled in size in less than a year.

According to Fortune 500 data, no other U.S. Company had created more jobs in the last decade than Amazon.

Amazon pay starts at $15-per hour minimum wage and full-time workers receive health insurance, 401k, and 20 weeks paid parental leave among their benefits. In May, as a response to the covid-19 pandemic, Amazon also launched subsidized childcare for employees.

Amazon is clearly leading the way in the online marketplace but retailers Wal-mart and Target have also seen recent surges in profits and hiring of employees for their online shopping businesses. Wal-mart is currently the world’s largest private employer with 2.2-million employees and Amazon is expected to surpass that number in the next couple of years.

It will be interesting to see if Amazon can overtake the world’s largest overall employer at some point which is the U.S. Department of Defense. U.S. Taxpayers are the ones that foot the bill for the 3.2 million employees currently under the Government run agency.
