When will this end? Day three since Congress returned is coming to an end, and as the sun sets, there is still no House Speaker.

After ten rounds of voting, Republican leader Kevin McCarthy’s fight for the title of House Speaker is still not over. Despite making several concessions to those who refused to vote for him, they are still voting no. The 118th Congress was expected to be a win for Republicans, but some fear that agreeing on a House Speaker is only a glimpse into what is expected to come. There are multiple alternative candidates for the role, such as Reps. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) and Byron Donalds (R-Fla.)

So what happens if these votes continue to go nowhere?
Business is at a standstill for the House of Representatives, and House committee staffers are likely worried they won’t be paid. The pay period started on Jan 3. Staffers will only receive a paycheck if this gridlock is over by Jan 13.

Another problem is Congress member-elects are waiting to be sworn in. The incomers can only be sworn in once a House Speaker is chosen. But what about you?

A list of services could be frozen if a House Speaker is not chosen. The list includes queries about passports, the IRS, or immigration. Many Congressmen are still Congressmen-elects which means they can not help with any of your pressing issues.

This is the first time in history that multiple votes have been needed to choose a House Speaker, so this is unknown territory. Until then, America is at a standstill.
