Alex Rodriguez – you know, the guy who may or may not still be together with Jennifer Lopez — and billionaire Marc Lore appear to be close to owning the NBA’s Minnesota Timberwolves and the WNBA’s Minnesota Lynx, finalizing a deal with current owner Glen Taylor, according to reports.
Rodriguez, who had a Hall of Fame-worthy Major League Baseball career, currently works as an analyst.
He and Lore released a statement on Saturday:
“We look forward to entering this phase of the process with Glen Taylor. Our respect for him and the legacy he built lays an amazing foundation for what is to come. We are excited by the prospect of getting to know the Timberwolves organization, the talented team and their incredible fans.”
The two now enter a 30-day exclusive negotiating window. If a deal is finalized, they would first become minority owners, according to The Athletic, and in 2023, would gain full control.
Reports indicate a $1.5 billion price was agreed upon and that the team would remain in Minneapolis — important for Taylor, who has owned the team for almost 30 years.
Rodriguez was among those trying to buy the New York Mets – his ex-fiancee Lopez also was in that group that included Lore and the other partners.
Always a businessman, Rodriguez founded his holding company, “A-Rod Corp.” in 1996.
Lore began such pursuits as Walmart’s U.S. e-commerce, Jet.com and Diapers.com.
The Timberwolves haven’t been very good.
They last made the postseason in 2017-18 season, when they lost in the first round.
And before that? Not since 2004.
And now? They are the worst team in the NBA with a 13-40 record entering Sunday’s games.
Taylor saw much better fortune with the WNBA’s Lynx, winners of four championships in the past 10 years.
