98% of Diagnosed Monkeypox Cases Are Gay Men

98% of the patients, who all agreed to be in the study, were gay or bisexual men, reflecting the fact that much of the monkeypox transmission in this outbreak has happened during sexual contact.

“Anyone can get and spread monkeypox. The current cases are primarily spreading among social networks of gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men (MSM).”

Some health experts said they agreed that monkeypox should be declared a public health emergency. The first case of monkeypox was reported in the US on May 18, according to the HHS.

The Symptoms

A study published in the New England Journal of Medicine on Thursday found that among 528 monkeypox patients identified in 16 countries between April and June, rashes were common (occurring 95% of the time).

73% of patients had ANOGENITAL lesions, while roughly 10% of patients had only one monkeypox lesion visible on them.

The Biden administration is expected to declare monkeypox a public health emergency in the coming days, according to two sources.

On July 23, the World Health Organization declared a global health emergency due to the “uncontrolled spread of monkeypox worldwide.”

More than 16,000 cases of Monkeypox have been reported in 75 countries, including 5 deaths related to the disease, according to the WHO.

New York City has had 839 reported cases, according to the NYC Department of Health, which warns that “there are likely many more cases that have not been diagnosed.”

“We are determined to accelerate our response in the days ahead.”

The potential declaration comes as nearly 800,000 doses of the monkeypox vaccine will soon be available for distribution, US health regulators said Wednesday.

More than 310,000 doses of a two-shot vaccine have already been sent to clinics nationwide, but some in San Francisco, New York and other major cities insist they still can’t meet demand.

4,639 confirmed cases of monkeypox had been reported in the US as of Wednesday, including 1,228 in New York state, according to the CDC.

“Cases in NYC are increasing, and there are likely more cases that have not been diagnosed,” NYC Health’s website reads.
