If you’re eager to find out who made more than the chief financial officer of Google in 2020, the most efficient way to find out would be to “Google” it, of course.
And who is in charge of the company’s “Search” arm?
There’s your answer: Prabhakar Raghavan made $55.25 million last year, according to the company’s annual proxy filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission and about $5 million more than CFO Ruth Porat pulled in.
Raghavan’s earnings, as with most lavishly compensated execs, largely comprises stock awards – in his case $54.58 million worth.
Kind of makes that pedestrian salary of $655,000 easier to stomach.
(For you math experts, the additional $9 grand-plus was part of the “other” compensation listed.)
Raghavan, 60, oversees Google Search, Assistant, Geo, Ads, Commerce, and Payments products. Previously, he was the senior vice president of ads, commerce and payments.
He knows the Search landscape, working in that sphere for IBM in 1995, then teaching a course at Stanford on search. He founded the research lab at Yahoo after joining the company in 2005 and joined Google in 2012
The company, Alphabet, generated more than $182 billion (with a “B”) in revenue in fiscal 2020, so it stood to reason that the top exec behind the business itself collected more loot than the Search guy.
The SEC filing listed Chief Business Officer Philipp Schindler as having 2020 compensation of $66.38 million.
It’s hard to question Raghavan’s pay, however, considering the department – defined “Google Search and other” in the filings — accounted for $104 billion (yep, with a “B”) in revenue last year, leading the company’s other reported segments such as YouTube Ads and Google Clouds.
