8 migrants, mostly Venezuelan, got killed by a driver to ran a red light, plowing into the group. They had just arrived to Brownsville, TX the night before, after crossing the continent for month.
They were congregating outside of a homeless shelter that been hosting migrants, when at 8:30 an SUV ran a red light, lost control and careened into them.
In addition to the eight dead, ten others were injured but survived.
The driver, George Alvarez, is hispanic himself. He’s been arrested numerous times for burglary, theft, assault and DWIs.
Alvarez is not cooperating with police. He has refused a breathalyzer and has given them a number of different names.
Police suspect it may be deliberate. There were reports of Alvarez shouting anti immigrant statements at the same place a number of days before.
He is charged with eight counts of manslaughter, but it could end up being worse.
